Vision

Malibu Elementary is a school where learning is expected and respected. Our community of learners includes students, parents, staff, administratiors and business partners who actively accept responsibility for success. We provide a warm, safe, orderly and trusting environment. We nurture the foundation of success in each other and believe that each child deserves our best. Through meaningful and varied experiences, we continuously pursue academic excellence.

Mission

The mission of Malibu Elementary School, in partnership with family and community, is to prepare all students to meet today’s challenges and tomorrow’s expectations.

Malibu History

In September 1962, Malibu Elementary began its operation at Plaza Elementary School. There were eleven “half day classes”. The building, now located at 3632 Edinburgh Drive, was first occupied in January 1963. Ruth J. Bridges was the first principal. The official school mascot “Malibu Surfers” was adopted and remains to this day. The enrollment of the student body was three hundred sixteen (316), with grades first through seventh.

In 1973 kindergarten was added. Kathy Sands remains as one of the kindergarten teachers. Our largest enrollment was in 1974 when the membership rose to 1,050. The gymnasium was built in 1990. Mark Carmack teaches the physical education classes. The gym houses an after-school Parks and Recreational program and is used nights and weekends for community activities. In 1994 Principal Susan Clark began a computer lab, housed in a renovated room. We evolved from seven (7) Apple Computers, with bi-weekly classes to an up-to-date technology program with a full time Computer Resource Specialist, John Maher. He assists the faculty in integrating technology with all subjects, maintains our hardware, software, the webpage and volunteers before school with a Computer Club for fourth and fifth grades. Our computer lab presently consists of 30 computers, three laser printers and a Smart Board. Well-equipped computer centers with three or more computers are in every classroom.

Principal, Pam Bennis, and Assistant Principal Patti Porter are the current administrators. They, along with Office Manager and Bookkeeper Patty Peck, Attendance Secretary Amy Forbes, Office Associate Sue Dyson, DSS Amy Kelly and DSS Sheryl Walls make up our office staff. Nurse Gloria Liston maintains our large clinic facility. The cafeteria is managed by Mary McCauley, and the custodial team is under the direction of Marshall Mack.

Presently there are two to four classes per grade level, kindergarten through fifth. Malibu also provides special services, including MR, ESL, Speech, SECEP and PALs.

In 2007 the division's new BRIDGES program, designed to support K-2 students with autism spectrum disorders, opened here. Early Discoveries, is for pre-school age children maintains a building on the campus. Music, strings and chorus are taught by Nate Kinnison. Art is taught by Eileen Treon. Katie Taylor is the counselor who offers programs such as citizenship and conflict resolution, mentoring and deployment groups to meet the needs of our students . Wanda Johnson and Beverly Payne hold classes daily in our Media Center which contains over 12,000 volumes. Our Reading Resource Specialist is Beth Estill and the Gifted Resource Specialist is Amy Furlich.

Students are encouraged to participate in SCA, computer club, chorus, strings and newspaper club. Our students also compete in school wide events such as the Reflections Contest and Battle of the Books. The Surflings program targets in-zone children 3-5 who are not yet enrolled at Malibu and meets several evenings a year to promote skills children need to be successful in school. The stabilization of our residential area has reduced the student body to approximately 340 students.

Malibu has been an accredited school since the introduction of Standards of Learning testing. We very proud of our high SOL scores. 

Former Malibu principals are: Ruth Bridges, Anna Margaret Rhodes, Jim Payne, Raymond Alexander, John W. Prine, Margaret Nicolls, Susan Clark, Barbara Tourgee and Kathleen Hwang.

Malibu completed a two-year renovation on November 21, 2003, that provided a state-of-the-art Media Center, large Technology Center, Science Lab, spacious Cafeteria, extra-large Music and Art rooms, air-conditioning for the gym and upgraded all classrooms. Each classroom has 3-4 computers and all computers are internet-accessible. Additionally, the school has five mobile computer stations, three with 20 laptops and two others with 30 AlphaSmart computers.

In 2005 Malibu was selected as the top elementary school in the state for reading and awarded the Virginia State Reading Association Exemplary Reading Program Award. The school was also awarded the prestigious International Reading Association Exemplary Reading Award and a Commendation from the Virginia Beach City Public Schools schoolboard.

Malibu Plan for Continuous Improvement

Malibu Elementary School currently has approximately 340 students and a dedicated group of teachers, staff, and parents who have helped create a nurturing environment for learning. The school serves students in kindergarten through fifth grade.  The BRIDGES program, for students with autism spectrum issues, is located here. The school also continues to offer two MR classes and full inclusion services to meet the needs of special education students. 

Malibu offers a variety of programs to meet the needs of our students. Among the student groups for this current academic school year (2009-2010) are SCA, computer club, chorus, strings, drama, girls’ running club and newspaper club as well as PTA-sponsored after-school enrichment classes. Community members participate in Lunch Buddies, serving as mentors to selected students.  Our reading program sponsors a variety of events such as Literacy Night, Dinner Theatre Night, Readathon, Battle of the Books and Surflings which provides reading resources to children aged three to five.

This year the Virginia Beach Education Foundation awarded 8 grants to staff members.  Malibu also received a grant from Target to support our reading program.

Malibu is Fully Accredited and has met the AYP (Annual Yearly Progress) requirements for No Child Left Behind.
